PREVIOUS EDITIONS
The Architecture Award originated in Spain back in 2005 and following three back-to-back national editions it extended its scope to become an international event with overwhelming levels of interest. The first international edition of the Award took place in 2013 and its winner, the Belgian architect Xaveer de Geyter, was announced at the final awards ceremony held in Granada. The Second edition, in 2015, which was won by the Spanish architect Alberto Campo Baeza, was announced in the German city of Berlin. The third edition, in 2017, which was won by the French architects Anne Lacaton & Jean-Philippe Vassal was announced in the Italian city of Florencia. The fourth edition, in 2019, was won by the Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, and was announced in the French city of Bordeaux. The fifth edition, in 2021, which was won again by the Belgian architect Xaveer de Geyter, was announced in the French city of Paris. The sixth edition, in 2023, which was won by the Spanish architects Ramón Pico and F. Javier López (Estudio ACTA) in the general category and by the Portuguese architects Hugo Ferreira and Nuno Melo Sousa in the small-scale residential architecture, with the announcement made in the Spanish city of Seville.

The awards ceremony was held on Friday, 17 November 2023 in the city of Seville, Spain. In attendance were the 14 teams of architects competing for the grand prize, along with the members of the international panel of judges and representatives from the various companies belonging to the BigMat group.
From a total of more than 1,000 projects submitted in the seven European countries (Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Portugal, Slovakia and Spain), the jury, chaired by Jesús Aparicio and featuring David Van Severen (Belgium), Petr Janda (Czech Republic + Slovakia), Gilles Delalex (France), Enrico Molteni (Italy), Nuno Brandão Costa (Portugal), Ángela García de Paredes (Spain), and the secretary of the jury, Jesús Donaire, awarded the BigMat’23 International Grand Prize for Architecture to the Fish Market and the development of the southern area of the port of Roquetas de Mar, located in Almería, Spain, by Spanish architects Ramón Pico and F. Javier López (Estudio ACTA).
The jury praised: “The project imprints a sense of order on an initially chaotic environment: the port of Roquetas de Mar and the various constructions present there, through the clear, sharp and emphatic volume of the fish market, interacts and synergises with the scale of the nearby castle and, through its material construction and textiles, is reminiscent of the greenhouses that dot the land in the province of Almeria.”
Meanwhile, the awards panel awarded the Grand Prize for Small-Scale Residential Architecture to Portuguese architects Hugo Ferreira and Nuno Melo Sousa for what it called “a very special project, with remarkable characteristics. A very simple project; one built in concrete as a dwelling of immense simplicity yet, at the same time, of great power in its relationship with the surrounding landscape.”
The Grand Prizes were presented by Big Mat International President Fabrice Maud and award Chairman Jesus Ascorbic.
