The entry period for the 6th edition of the BigMat International Architecture Award competition will run from 18 January through to 27 April 2023. The event is being organised by BigMat International, a leading international chain of independent traders of construction materials.
BIGMAT INTERNATIONAL S.A.
The BigMat Group was created in 1981 in a bid to bring together companies from different European countries and promote and foster cooperation and closer ties between them. The Group’s growth and progress over the years is a result of:
- Independence of the participating businesses
- Spirit of excellence
- Desire to collaborate and share experiences
- Proximity to clients
The BigMat chain has over 892 sales outlets spread across seven European countries, namely Belgium, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain. The Group’s global turnover exceeds 2 billion euros and its business is focused primarily on the construction trade. Clients can always rely on BigMat to support their architectural projects by supplying reliable building materials and providing a wealth of expert advice.
The group provides direct support and advice in connection with refurbishment projects and new builds in a sector currently in the depths of recession, reflecting its tireless commitment to today’s society. This attitude is embodied through sustainable development and social housing and also through new ideas on how best to structure and arrange cities and refinements to home design and living conditions. The group believes that architects play a key role and have a huge impact on this gradual transformation.
That is why we have chosen to hold the BigMat’23 International Architecture Award with the aim of recognising and rewarding architectural excellence, encouraging dialogue between all the different players involved in the architecture sector and championing high-quality construction. Close attention will be paid to those architectural works that have made a major contribution to contemporary architectural culture by drawing on timeless architectural designs and concepts to have stood the test of time. We will also focus on how well the entries incorporate energy efficiency parameters, sustainable construction and the quest for greater comfort and habitability.

The prize is open to architects who work in one of the seven countries taking part in the award, namely Belgium, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain. To be eligible, the project must have been built between 1 January 2019 and 1 January 2023 in any of the participating countries. Buildings that won or made the final in previous editions of this competition may not be entered again into this sixth edition. Moreover, architects or architectural firms that have won the Grand Prize in previous editions will not be eligible to enter the BMIAA Awards again.
All participating architects will have the chance to compete before a panel of internationally renowned judges tasked with selecting the winner of the BMIAA’23 Grand Prize for Small-Scale Residential Architecture and the BigMat’23 International Grand Prize, in addition to the 14 BigMat’23 National Awards.
The awards panel will select a total of 14 BMIAA’23 National Awards: seven for small-scale residential architecture projects and seven for other architectural works. Meanwhile, the seven National Awards for all other works of architecture will compete for the BMIAA’23 Grand Prize for Architecture.
The registration period will run from 18 January through to 27 April 2023, with the closing event and awards ceremony to take place in November 2023 on occasion of the Annual Congress of the BigMat International Group. The two Grand Prizes may not be declared void and nor may there be a dead heat.
