INTRODUCTION
BigMat International, a leading international chain of independent traders of construction materials.
BIGMAT INTERNATIONAL S.A.
The BigMat Group was created in 1981 in a bid to bring together companies from different European countries and promote and foster cooperation and closer ties between them. The Group’s growth and progress over the years is a result of:
- Independence of the different business owners
- Spirit of excellence
- Desire to collaborate and share experiences
- Proximity to clients
The BigMat chain has over 900 sales outlets spread across seven European countries, namely Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Belgium. The Group’s global turnover exceeds 2 billion euros and its business is focused primarily on the construction trade. Clients can always rely on BigMat to support their architectural projects by supplying building materials and providing its invaluable expert advice.
The group provides direct support and consultancy in connection with restoration projects and new builds in a sector currently in the depths of recession, reflecting its tireless commitment to contemporary society. This attitude is embodied through sustainable development and social housing and also through new ideas on how best to structure and arrange cities and refinements to home design and living conditions. The group believes that architects play a key role and have a huge impact in this process of gradual transformation.
That is why we have chosen to hold the “BigMat International Architecture Award’21” with the aim of recognising and rewarding architectural excellence, encouraging dialogue between all the different players involved in the architecture sector and championing high-quality construction. Close attention will be paid to those architectural works that have made a major contribution to contemporary architectural culture by drawing on timeless architectural designs and concepts to have endured the test of time. The panelists will also focus on how well the entries incorporate energy efficiency parameters, sustainable construction and the quest for greater comfort and habitability.

REWARDS EXCELLENCE IN ARCHITECTURE: SMALL-SCALE PROJECTS TAKE CENTRE STAGE TO MARK BIGMAT’S 40TH ANNIVERSARY
BIGMAT INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE AWARD ’21
The prize is open to architects who work in one of the seven countries taking part in the award, namely Belgium, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain. Further, their entry must have been built in one of those regions. To be eligible, the project must have been built between 1 January 2017 and 1 January 2021 in any of the participating countries. Buildings that won or made the final in previous editions of this contest may not be entered again into this fifth edition.
All participating architects will have the chance to compete before a panel of internationally renowned judges tasked with selecting the winner of the BigMat’21 International Grand Prize, as well as the winners of the six BigMat’21 National Prizes and the seven BigMat’21 Finalists. To mark the 40th anniversary of the BigMat brand in a unique way in this fifth edition, the jury will have to ensure that at least one of the two projects selected is a small-scale construction (not exceeding 1,000m2, including the new construction, interventions on existing structures and interior design). The seven winners of the National Prizes will compete with one another for the BMIAA’21 International Architecture Award Grand Prize. In the event that the Grand Prize is not awarded to a small-scale project, the jury will award a Special Mention to a project in this category.
Candidates will be able to register for the competition from 18 January to 29 April 2021. The awards ceremony will be held during the BigMat International Annual Conference in November 2021.
