Foodscapes, curated by Eduardo Castillo-Vinuesa and Manuel Ocaña, continues and expands the curatorial project presented in the Spanish pavilion during the XVIII International Architecture Biennale of Venice. In the current situation where energy debates are prioritized, those that focus on food remain in the background. The concept studies the way in which it is produced, distributed and consumed.

Every time we eat, we connect our palate to a multitude of remote places: supermarkets, greenhouses, farms, warehouses, logistics networks, cold chains, landfills… Despite their immense importance, these mundane architectures rarely receive the attention they deserve. But in a world where the molecular becomes tectonic and where each bite reverberates across the globe, it is now more urgent than ever to redesign our food systems with their ecosystemic implications in mind.

When we eat, we digest territories. Foodscapes is a journey into the architectures that feed the world: from the domestic laboratories of our kitchens to the vast operational landscapes that nourish our cities.

Through an audiovisual project of five SHORT FILMS, a documentary archive in the form of a TOTAL COOKBOOK, and a collaborative RESEARCH PLATFORM, FOODSCAPES explores the Spanish agro-architectural context – Europe’s food engine – to address global issues. The project analyzes the past and present of our food systems and the architectures that build them, to look to the future and ask about other possible models: ones capable of feeding the world without devouring the planet.
